Distance learning course of 12 units

This course on diabetes care is split into two modules about diabetes mellitus. Both of these modules are based upon the following documents:
  • National Service Framework (NSF) for Diabetes: Standards (Department of Health, 2001)
  • The National Framework for Diabetes: Delivery Strategy (Department of Health 2003)
  • The Supplementary Information Document for the National Service Framework (Department of Health 2001)

    Students in Wales and Scotland

    The National Service Framework for Diabetes applies to England only. Wales have produced National Service Frameworks for diabetes for their own country. If you are working in Wales you will need to use the NSF from your own country to complete many of the learning activities. We tell you later in this introduction how to get hold of these materials.

    Module aims

    The aims of Module 1 are to:
  • Explore the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus.
  • discuss policy issues related to diabetes mellitus.
  • Examine in critical detail some of the standards within the NSF for diabetes, within the context of assessment, treatment and management of the disease.
  • Focus on implementation of the NSF Standards 1 & 2 and 4 to 7 within the community and hospital settings, and the evidence base for best practice In diabetes care.

    The aims of Module 2 are to:
  • Continue to address policy issues related to diabetes
  • Examine in detail the remaining standards within the NSF for Diabetes (Standards 3, and 8-12) and their implementation
  • Examine, in the context of the above standards, the assessment, treatment and management of diabetes
  • Explore the multiprofessional management of the diabetes service and the delivery strategy of the NSF for Diabetes

    Module learning outcomes

    By the end of Module 1 you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus related to disease diagnosis.<
  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the role and use of National Service Frameworks (NSFs) in general, and the NSF for diabetes in particular, critically evaluating its relationship to current local and national healthcare policy.
  • Examine critically: the NSF standards for prevention of Type II diabetes and the identification of people with diabetes; local policy and practice related to these standards; and make recommendations for your own local policy and practice based on your analysis.
  • Examine critically: the NSF standards for clinical care of adults, children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus and for the management of diabetic emergencies; local policy and practice related to these standards; and make recommendations for your own local policy and practice based on your analysis.
  • Demonstrate in-depth understanding of pathophysiology related to the Standards 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7 within the NSF for diabetes.

    By the end of Module 2 you will be able to:
  • Propose, justify and critically evaluate educational strategies for clients with diabetes in order to promote their empowerment and self care.
  • Demonstrate in-depth evidence-based knowledge of the assessment, treatment and management of people with diabetes during admission to hospital and during pregnancy, utilising new approaches to care management when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of current local and national policy relevant to diabetes, identifying, assessing and resolving problems raised by policy change.
  • Demonstrate in-depth evidence-based knowledge related to the assessment, treatment and management of long-term complications of diabetes mellitus.
  • Evaluate critically current research and literature, and demonstrate the ability to use this knowledge to underpin approaches to care.
  • Manage the overall provision of services for clients with diabetes in a specific geographical location, reflecting the Delivery Plan of the NSF for Diabetes.
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of a multiprofessional diabetes service and an understanding of other professionals� roles, identifying the leadership requirements of team care for clients with diabetes.

    Information available Online access to certain medical and other health related literature and research. You will need to register and provide a user name and password but the service is free so it is worth doing. Once you are registered you can log onto Medscape any time, giving your user name and password, and access a range of good papers related to diabetes.

    Access to journals

    You will need to access electronic journals to complete this module.

    Many of the learning activities will require you to read, critique, analyse, evaluate and/or compare certain chapters, articles, research papers or other literature, including web sites and electronic journal articles.

    If you are registered at a university, you can access electronic journals through your university library or learning resource centre. Many universities subscribe to the Athens electronic journal service through which you can access an extensive range of electronic journals and databases including Medline and CINAHL.

    Even if your university subscribes to Athens, you still need to set up your own individual Athens account with a user name and password.

    In addition many NHS Trusts provide access to electronic journals. One such opportunity for those who work in the London area is HILO. Like Athens, this provides electronic access to health related journals.

    Nursing Times Net

    This service give you free access to an archive of articles from Nursing Times. You need to register with Nursing Times Net (registration is FREE). Go to the following website, www.nursingtimes.net and you will receive simple instructions about how to register. You will need to select a user name and a password so make sure you keep a record of the ones you have selected as, once you have registered, you will need to log on using that user name and password every time you wish to use the service.

    PDF files

    To download pdf files you will need to have an Adobe Acrobat Reader. If your computer does not have Acrobat Reader installed, you will be asked If you want to download it the first time that you try to download a pdf file. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the reader.
